CAMPACCIO
HISTORY

“CAMPACCIO” SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE IN ITALIAN SPEECH: IT LITERALLY MEANS “BUMPY, DERANGED FIELD”

Sangiorgese turned 100 in 2022, Campaccio counts 68 uninterrupted editions, all in times of peace and may peace always play a role on the international stage of San Giorgio su Legnano.

No way to count how many Italian champions and championships have passed through the Campaccio. There was a memorable European Championship in 2006, the World Athletics Gold Level Cross Country Tour is constantly hosted in San Giorgio, Campaccio deserved the World Athletics Heritage Plaque in 2023... while the “Gold Star for sporting merits” was already awarded to Sangiorgese Sports Union by National Olympic Committee back in 1988.

The contemporary era made a number of social projects grow, the first one being a joint "gender equity" initiative with European Athletics. It was 10 March 1957 when in a rather small village north of Milan the 1948 Olympic Discus Throw Champion, Adolfo Consolini, shot the gun to start the first Campaccio.

Without going into great detail about all the champions who arrived in San Giorgio su Legnano, the simple alphabetical overview of the winners is impressive:
